Designing Safe and Accountable GenAI as a Learning Companion with Women Banned from Formal Education

In regions where gender-restrictive policies prevail, access to formal education for women is often severely limited, posing significant safety and privacy challenges. In such contexts, many women resort to online self-learning and generative AI (GenAI) as alternatives to traditional educational pathways. Despite the increasing reliance on these technologies, there is a notable lack of understanding regarding the specific requirements needed for safe and accountable GenAI support.

A recent study, detailed in arXiv:2604.07253v1, explores the insights of 20 women in Afghanistan regarding their experiences and expectations from GenAI as a learning and employability tool. This research is underpinned by a broader recruitment survey involving 140 participants, revealing vital information about the aspirations and concerns of women facing educational barriers.

  • Learning Dynamics: There are concerns that direct-answer interactions with GenAI can undermine genuine learning by creating a false sense of progress. Participants emphasized the importance of fostering deeper understanding rather than simply seeking quick answers.

Impact on Aspirations and Agency

The study found a positive correlation between envisioning the future with GenAI through participatory design and increases in the participants’ aspirations, perceived agency, and perceived avenues for success. Specifically, statistical analysis revealed:

  • Aspirations increased significantly (p = .01).
  • Perceived agency also showed significant improvement (p = .01).
  • Perceived avenues for pursuing education and employment opportunities increased (p = .03).

Design Directions for Safe and Accountable GenAI

Building on the insights gathered from participants, the study proposes several design directions aimed at creating a safe and accountable GenAI experience:

  • Focus on safety-first interactions and enhanced user control to protect privacy and promote trust.
  • Develop context-grounded support that considers the unique constraints faced by women in restrictive environments.
  • Provide pedagogically aligned assistance that encourages genuine learning experiences rather than quick-fix solutions.
