Procgen and MineRL Competitions
We’re excited to announce that OpenAI is co-organizing two NeurIPS 2020 competitions with AIcrowd, Carnegie Mellon University, and DeepMind, using Procgen Benchmark and MineRL. These competitions aim to advance research in reinforcement learning by providing challenging benchmarks that facilitate the evaluation and comparison of AI algorithms.
Overview of the Competitions
The two competitions focus on different aspects of reinforcement learning:
- Procgen Benchmark Competition: This competition leverages the Procgen Benchmark, which consists of procedurally generated environments that allow for a diverse set of tasks. The primary goal is to encourage participants to develop agents that can generalize across different levels and tasks, showcasing their adaptability in various scenarios.
- MineRL Competition: This competition is centered around the MineRL environment, which is based on the popular game Minecraft. Participants are tasked with training AI agents to perform complex tasks such as resource gathering and building within the game. The challenge lies in the vast and open-ended nature of Minecraft, which requires agents to learn and adapt their strategies over time.
Goals and Objectives
The main objectives of these competitions are to:
- Encourage innovation in reinforcement learning techniques and algorithms.
- Provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to showcase their work and compete with others in the AI community.
- Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among participants, fostering a spirit of scientific inquiry and exploration.
- Enhance the understanding of agent generalization and adaptability in complex environments.
Participation and Prizes
Both competitions are open to researchers, students, and enthusiasts in the field of artificial intelligence. Participants will have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes, recognition in the AI community, and the chance to publish their findings in related conferences or journals. Registration details and specific rules can be found on the respective competition pages hosted by AIcrowd.
Why Procgen and MineRL?
The choice of Procgen and MineRL as competition environments reflects the growing interest in developing AI agents that can operate effectively in diverse and unpredictable settings. Both environments present unique challenges that require advanced problem-solving skills, making them ideal for pushing the boundaries of current reinforcement learning methodologies.
Conclusion
We invite the global AI community to participate in these competitions to drive forward the state of the art in reinforcement learning. Through collaboration and competition, we aim to unlock new insights and develop more sophisticated AI agents capable of navigating complex environments. Join us in this exciting journey at NeurIPS 2020!
