LoViF 2026: The First Challenge on Weather Removal in Videos

The LoViF 2026 Challenge has emerged as a significant initiative aimed at tackling the intricate problem of weather removal in videos. As detailed in the paper arXiv:2604.10655v2, this challenge encourages researchers and developers to innovate methods for restoring videos that have been degraded by adverse weather conditions, such as rain and snow.

The primary objective of this challenge is to achieve visually plausible and temporally consistent results while successfully preserving the scene structure and motion dynamics. This endeavor is particularly important in various applications, including surveillance, autonomous driving, and media production, where clear visibility is paramount.

Introducing the WRV Dataset

To facilitate the challenge, a new short-form Weather Removal Video (WRV) dataset has been introduced. This dataset is specifically designed for video weather removal tasks and consists of 18 videos comprising a total of 1,216 synthesized frames. These synthesized frames are paired with 1,216 real-world ground-truth frames, ensuring that participants have access to high-quality references for their restoration efforts.

Key features of the WRV dataset include:

  • Video Count: 18 videos.
  • Total Frames: 1,216 synthesized frames paired with 1,216 real-world frames.
  • Resolution: 832 x 480 pixels.
  • Dataset Split: The dataset is divided into training, validation, and test sets, maintaining a 1:1:1 ratio.

Advancing Video Restoration Techniques

The LoViF 2026 Challenge aims to propel advancements in robust and realistic video restoration techniques under real-world weather conditions. Evaluation protocols have been established that consider both fidelity and perceptual quality, ensuring that the results not only restore the original appearance of the video but also maintain the viewer’s perception of realism.

The challenge has garnered considerable attention, attracting 37 participants from various backgrounds in the field of computer vision and image processing. Out of these, 5 valid final submissions were received, each accompanied by corresponding fact sheets detailing the methodologies employed by the participants.

Conclusion and Future Implications

As the LoViF 2026 Challenge progresses, it represents a critical step in the ongoing pursuit of effective weather removal solutions for video content. The project’s findings, methodologies, and contributions will be publicly available, providing a valuable resource for future research and development in this area. Interested parties can access the challenge details and submissions at CodaBench.

The advancements achieved through this challenge are expected to have far-reaching implications, enhancing the quality of video content in various industries and paving the way for future innovations in video restoration technology.
